Opening Day Readiness...or lack of!!!
Not to take away from all the hard work everyone has put in, because it has been considerable, but we still have LOTS of work left to do and we have essentially ONE workday left THIS SATURDAY November 14th!! So this is the 'rally the troops call'.
If there is one constant learned in over 30 years of duck hunting...it's that Mother Nature is never afraid to spit on her hands and throw out a nasty spitball, and this year is no exception. Arkansas is having a record setting rainfall year (topping records that have stood for 80 years) that has created some havoc for farmers, and well.....duck hunters trying to get pits ready.
We started off way ahead of the game work-wise, accomplishing alot early. But rainfall has delayed alot of the work....bottom line is, we don't have a single pit that is 100% hunt ready for opening day. Let me say that again...NOT A SINGLE PIT IS READY FOR OPENING DAY!
Thats the bad news...the good news is that opening day readiness is within sight, we just need another great turnout for the last remaining official workday! Kudos to the new guys who have been working their A's off,,,,the caveat is we need a good turnout of veterans this weekend. The bulk of the work left is getting out to ALL the pits to unbag and spread decoys. As folks drive up (8am main TRIV clubhouse on hwy 14), I will send you out to specific pits to work on getting the decoys out. Members who know the pit locations are key to take out those who don't. Communication is key...as you finish up at a pit, call or text me (901-351-5893) to report in. BRING YOUR FOUR-WHEELER and waders. Bring a bailing bucket and pickle bucket as most pits have several inches of water from several rains since being cleaned. Bring your side-cutter pliers. Bring a pocketknife in case you have one of those decoy bags with strings all jumbled up (Aaaaackkkkkkkk!!)
As I drove by the Section Two Farm on Sunday about mid-day, I had to pull over and watch and listen for a while....the ducks are starting to raft up and fill out the fields. Gadwalls, Mallards, Teal, Widgeon, and Shovelers were landing all over S Roberts, they seem to really have an affinity for, and like the fact that the pit sticks out like a sore thumb :)
Get excited....see you Wed night.
