If you find it...they will come!
We drove over Sat around 9 a.m. just to get away from the big city, Me, my son, a friend of his, Dan and Steve. Packed the truck with rifles prepared to chase the coyotes. Was snowing pretty good in Harrisburg when we arrived. Drove around the entire farm and what to my eyes did appear but hundreds of Mallards keeping two holes open on West Fishpond and Claypool's. Ducks everywhere, NO kidding! Ducks on ice, sounds like a Disney show for the kids, and oh was it!
We set up 12 full body's on the ice just outside the hole, and the duck gods smiled on us for our effort. 12 mallards, two Blue Wings, a Green Wing, 2 Blue Bills and a Gadwal all in two hours. Michael even killed his first "TRIPLE"ever and on MALLARDS too, 2 drakes and a hen. My son, while standing on the ice, shot a duck, both he and the duck hit the ice on the third shot. For a minute I didn't know who shot who. I thought the ducks had taken up arms and were shooting back... It was one of those days. Never touched a call, just happened to find the ducks and were where they wanted to be. At one time 200 hundred were working both holes. It was quite the show. I wish I'd had a video camera. To show what expectaions I had, I left Memphis and I didn't even take my shotgun, I was prepared for the coyote hunt. I was strickly the observer on Saturday, but thanks to Food Giant I solved my problem at 5:30 and bought a new gun just for Sunday's 6:30 a.m. show.
Sunday morning...6 degrees, did I say 6 DEGREES? a new personal record for me...11 degrees was the old record set in 2005. Got to the hole again and found only a few Mallards setting and much of the holes frozen back up. Love the fish ponds for sneek attacks, so 5 guys loaded for bear, ice skating across the East Fish Pond, jumped up shootin and killed...noda! Ducks flew thataway... Set up the decoys, and waited, and waited, and waited. Three Mallards wanted back in the hole and three fell victim to the " 5 gun salute". Word was out, there were men willing to hunt in such conditions, and not another duck gave us a look. We could not complain.
Packed up, said hello to Sonic, and drove home laughing and gratedful that in spite of a so so season, two floods and the BIG CHILL, we had a GREAT hunt! Boys were asleep before we hit the ridge...LOL

Wish more peeps would do that with their hunts,,,makes it come alive for the rest of us. Takes a little bit extra time to take pix, download, and post...but it is much appreciated. Glad you had a great one. The mallards always seem particularly plump and beautiful in the late season icy weather.

I had a similar experience in our spot outside of Dewitt,Ar last week. I had no expectations and no one was on the farm.
I opened up a hole finished quick and my last duck was a banded drake!
Just goes to show you never know--I would have bet a hundred bucks there was no open water on the farm around Harrisburg as cold as it was.

Randy,
So glad to read your report, a memory that will be etched in your mind forever.
That's how you do it, son!

"He who scouts, is in the right place, and works for it, has the the best chance for gettin' some" and that goes for hunting too!!!
That's why it pays to drive the farm. Mallards didn't even circle. Just followed the levee from claypools res. Congrats on a great hunt, ya'll deserve it!
Greg it was the coolest hunt. Snow covered ice, blue bird afternoon, sun sitting in the west, we were looking east and the Mallards looked like paintings in the sky. Those green heads looked like 100 watt bulbs. So much fun you never felt the cold!
Randy
on you Randy....congratz and I share Mike's sentiment, you deserved a hunt for the ages! It was due!
