Ice Ice Baby 2010

Wow, it's cold out there and I'm up at 2:39 with a whooping cough trying to recover from what weather has been thrown at us lately. I know ducks can be had in ice, but I'm far from an expert. Curious to hear success stories and ideas that have worked for folks as I'm trying to round up a generator to give my "ice eater" a try in a ditch or wherever some deep water is. One of my favorite hunts ever was at the end of Tam's bedrest episode from kid #5 or #6 and everything was frozen for a couple weeks. The dux were so hungry, they were hitting a dry bean field by the 1000's. Stovie and I laid on our backs with a couple dozen duck decoys(with keels) and 6 canada shells and we spanked em. Group after group and we hunted as long as our backs could handle. The night before when I sank a 4 wheeler in the ditch next to the house at 2 am didn't help us stay any longer as I was a little under the weather as all we could see where the bottom of 4 tires, ugh.

Any good ice stories?

Make sure we are there in force on the thaw in all pits. Start off with deep water pits and let's be creative to make sure we urge the ice to thaw first and I think it will pay off. Last years best hunts were on the thaw and I hope to never forget the one I got in on.

Bring chain saws and any tricks you've got in the shop to speed up the ice that could be the thickest we've ever seen.

As fields thaw naturally, please let guys know asap so we can make sure we have good numbers of hunters spread out all over the farm. My hunch is that the spots that thaw naturally for whatever reasons will be full of hungry, very silly(like a buck in rut) dux.

ice so thick it will be unprecedented (or "unpresidented", as they say at the VA"). Rather than chainsaws, lets bring toys for the ice like sleds and such. Last time I remember temps this cold we drove a TRUCK on top of the ice. I see four-wheelers towing sleds across ricefields and truck ice-races across beanfields....LETS HAVE SOME FUN!

Ice Duck Dog Race'in...we need some gimped up ducks and a bookie.

I tried ice fishing at Claypools a few years back. That sucked!
