A buddy of mine who hunts south of us on Roberts Road said he had one inch thick ice today. When he left at 1pm he said it was only around 32 degrees and kinda overcast with a NW wind at 5-10mph.

He told me he was heading back to Memphis as he did not feel like it would melt until H-burg got one or more of the following:

(a) some serious sun
(b) above 45 degree temperature
(c) some warm rain

Thus, I would not count on open fields until Friday afternoon at the earliest.

Once the fields thaw though, it's might be on like donkey kong!

Whip!

Agree, Brodie and I hunted South Roberts today and had to work our very hard a few birds. Break the ice, tight group decoys, and take advantage of an early shoot before the sun hits! Birds are here!!!! Tim

Mike the general rule is you have a day before they freeze unless you have high winds. High wind can keep them open much longer. The field ice will melt in about a day after you get over 32 degrees, sun helps too.

The same thing happened last weekend. Freeze on Saturday AM then sun and 40 degrees in the afternoon and you had open water Sunday.
