This Morning: Bustin' Geese with Three Rivers on the Goose Hunt of My Dreams!

Well, I was fortunate enough to tie into a great goose hunt this morning, courtesy of George Washington and his "Bustin' Geese" spread and Hunter's invite! Waterfowling doesn't get any finer than this! It was a dream come true for me! Also on the hunt and doing excellent calling were Jeremy "Flyin Dutchman" Cooper of SC and Lance Vines (who apparently brings a truckfull of dogs to every hunt!).

I got to see some magnificent working geese, since they liked what they saw in the spread and heard from Lance and Jeremy. We had lots of interest from snows and specks alike, bringing down 19 plus 4.

What made it so memorable? Well, first there were all these geese! They kept on cupping their wings, sticking out their boots and even landing on us... we wound up having to shoot some just for self-preservation. Safety first!

The geese kept doing silly things that were memorable, too.

There were a couple of times when we'd shoot some of the frontal attackers coming at us out of the sun, and after the whooping and hollering slowed down... well, we heard some very shy 'hannc-hannk-hahnk's coming from behind us. Turned out that some other geese had taken advantage of our being distracted with shooting their pals and landed IN THE SPREAD directly behind us! The soft honks we heard were probably their attempts at conversation with their clique-ish new friends... "Guys?! (Geese are from up North, remember) Guys? Shouldn't we be getting out of here? Is it ok with you guys that there are some people and that black dog up in the middle of your flock here? Hello?"
...and about that time Hunter or Jeremy would walk up and shoo them up into the air like 20-pound white quail. You can guess the rest!

Another remarkable thing that happened (only once, though)... One of the snows fell DIRECTLY onto one of the decoy anchors, shish kabob-ing himself nicely and driving the stake even further into the ground. When Lance's dog tried to retrieve the bird, she found that he was literally nailed to the ground, and could not be budged! Lance had to help out the rightly confused dog with that particular retrieve!

The whole hunt was a great experience. Great companions, geese-a-plenty, perfect weather, and cozy layout blinds. Thanks to Hunter and George for having me out with you today!

PS: If yall are interested in goose hunting, you should talk to Hunter and George!

PPS: Ok, there were a LOT more pics, but I'm probably wearing you guys out with these already so I'll put a fork in this post and stop here.

Is always fun hunting with my Moo, thanks for makin the time to come during the week.

Still laughin about the first dog. Lance sure handled that well and looking forward to the end of the story.

Do get with me on booking conservation goose trips as it is a very, very different hunt than a duck hunt and most folks love it. I'm not sure how many years this window of opportunity will last, but the water is very warm.
