If you want to introduce your young kids to aquatic wildlife, Patriot Lake at Shelby Farms is home to lots of it!
In a recent weekend rental canoe outing there, Ben and I saw:

  • a Great Blue Heron
  • a juvenile Green Heron
  • 2 mated pairs of mallards
  • a Suzy and her lone duckling
  • Canada Geese and their goslings
  • Cypress trees (my favorite tree!)
  • and a lot else!

Patriot Lake has so much for a young mind to see and absorb... so it's a really satisfying daddy experience for me each time I take Ben there.
Also, you can follow up your boat trip with a stop at the Woodland Discovery Playground, where there's all kinds of fun to be had for kids and parents alike.
Ok, I'm gushing. Apparently I've become kind of a fan of Shelby Farms lately.

It is true that our passion for duck hunting and the outdoors is NOT limited to the 60 day season alone. I have a small piece of land and a 1 acre pond that keeps me hyped up all year. (if we don't get some rain soon it'll be another 1 acre of land I have to mow) Early spring every year I have wood ducks visit my place and I even built a wonderful Wood Duck nesting box for them... but as of yet no tenants...I guess the market is still soft..LOL A few years back I saw 20+ Woodies and a Gadwall on the pond!

I see waterfowl all over this city in some of the strangest places too. I think its really neat that you keep the passion going with the love of the outdoors with the young ones. They in fact are the next generation of outdoorsmen.

Hope you and your family are well my friend, I hope to see you soon!
